A student team from our Robotics Club from the Experimental Primary School of Florina has developed an environmental social network allowing its users to share measurements of air quality in real-time while they are riding their bikes!

Their system is comprised of:

  • A mobile device that is mounted on bikes and can measure air temperature, humidity, dust particles, carbon monoxide, barometric pressure, and noise.
  • An Android app that can be installed on smartphones and connects to the device via Bluetooth takes the measurements and uploads them to a web server along with the location of the smartphone (latitude and longitude). The app also has a map that shows all the measurements taken by other users in real-time, filtered by day and time.

This way, the users of the app can collect valuable information about weather conditions and pollution while biking in their cities, towns, and villages, without having the need to install permanent weather stations everywhere. You can read more on their webpage.

They started the design of the system in 2020, and they have now developed four prototypes of the device and a prototype of the Android app. One of the prototypes has also been sent to Istituto Comprensivo Statale ADELE ZARA. They have presented their system in various technology festivals and competitions, and they have won several prizes:

  • First place in the Vodafone Generation Next competition.
  • First place in the Open Education Technologies competitions.
  • One of the 10 best products in the student competition Junior Achievement Greece.
  • First place in the competition Artificial Intelligence in Education
