Western Macedonia has been for many years the energy center of Greece. The rich deposits of lignite (a high calories mineral) in the area offered Greece cheap and accessible energy for development and industrialization through the fifties and sixties. In recent years there has been a plan to turn into more sustainable sources of energy that do less harm to the environment. Many of the power plants in the area are in the process of closing or being converted to use other fuel.

The students of the 5th grade of the Experimental Primary School of Florina documented information about all the power plants in the area and the coal mines that have been used to support them.
